Here’s How to Keep Your Pole and Aerial Game Strong This Autumn.
Ah, autumn—crisp air, cosy jumpers, and... the sudden urge to avoid your workout in favour of binge-watching Netflix. As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, finding the motivation to train can feel like an uphill battle. But just because it’s cold and dark outside doesn’t mean your pole and aerial goals need to go into hibernation!
Here are some tips to help you stay motivated, keep warm, and make the most of your training during the darker months.
Layer Up!
Start your warm-up wearing extra clothes—socks, hoodies, leg warmers—anything to help you ease into your training. You can always peel off the layers as you heat up! That quickly generated heat will help you carry your warm up smoothly into your training.
Set Seasonal Goals
Use the change in season as an opportunity to set some season-specific goals. Maybe you want to nail a certain move by the end of November, or commit to a regular training schedule despite the darker days. Having a clear goal in mind will give you something to look forward to—and give you a reason to leave that cosy blanket behind.
Keep your goals realistic and measurable. For example:
Short-term: "By the end of November, I want to hold my shoulder mount for 3 seconds."
Long-term: "By the end of the season, I want to master that combo I’ve been struggling with."
Buddy Up for Accountability
Autumn’s a great time to buddy up with a training partner. Whether you’re training at the studio or online, having someone to cheer you on (and make sure you actually show up!) can be a game-changer. When it’s cold outside, it’s easy to cancel your solo training session, but cancelling on your buddy? Much harder.
If you can’t meet in person, schedule a virtual check-in after each training session. Snap a selfie post-workout and send it to each other as proof that you didn’t let the autumn slump win!
Embrace the Darkness—With a Twist
Let’s be real: the early sunsets can be demotivating. But instead of dreading the darkness, why not make it part of your training? Darker evenings can be the perfect backdrop for some dramatic, low-lit pole or aerial work. If you’ve ever wanted to do a moody, backlit routine, now’s your chance! Dim the lights, grab a spotlight or candle, and embrace the autumn vibes in your practice.
Reward Yourself
Need a little extra push to get off the couch? Promise yourself a treat after your training session! Whether it’s a hot bath, a cup of cocoa, or an extra hour of Netflix (guilt-free), having something to look forward to post-workout can make all the difference.
Track Your Progress
Autumn can be a tough time to stay on track, but that’s exactly why it’s important to document your journey. Whether you’re logging your progress in a journal or taking weekly videos of your training sessions, keeping track of what you’ve achieved will help you stay motivated and celebrate the small wins.
Speaking of journals… if you’re looking for the perfect way to stay accountable, why not check out our Mindfulness in Motion journals? They’re designed specifically for pole and aerial enthusiasts to help you track your progress, set goals, and reflect on your journey—even when it’s cold and dark outside. So, don’t let the cold, dark days hold you back.
With the right mindset and a few cosy tricks up your sleeve, you’ll be smashing your pole and aerial goals all season long. What are your favourite ways to stay motivated when the weather turns chilly? Share your tips in the comments!
